IAE in Their Report The Future of Hydrogen

Clean hydrogen is currently enjoying unprecedented political and business momentum, with the number of policies and projects around the world expanding rapidly. It concludes that now is the time to scale up technologies and bring down costs to allow hydrogen to become widely used. The pragmatic and actionable recommendations to governments and industry that are provided will make it possible to take full advantage of this increasing momentum.

The report finds the primary source of hydrogen today is via natural gas, and thus countries with low natural gas prices will have significant economic advantage in producing hydrogen.

 

Johnson Matthey Low-Carbon Hydrogen Process

This process is used in the UK HyNet and Acorn projects.

A gas heated reformer and auto-thermal reformer at its core to generate blue hydrogen from natural gas. This approach gives a higher hydrogen yield and is more energy efficient than existing SMR technologies. And, crucially, this

process is easier and cheaper to decarbonize through CCUS than an SMR. The process delivers a high CO2 capture rate, high efficiency and low-cost solution, providing significant benefits compared with SMR and alternative auto-thermal reforming (ATR) technologies.
